Patients attend lectures given by a physician three times per week. Topics discussed include the nature of chronic pain, medication use, and an overview of related anatomy and physiology.
A physical therapist works with each patient to design a customized fitness program consisting of stretching, strengthening, and cardiovascular exercise.
Patients train in an on-site gym equipped with a wide variety of equipment. Fitness trainers work with each patient to answer their questions and to ensure that exercises are done safely and correctly.

A fully equipped kitchen is available to program participants for practice completing daily activities such as cooking and cleaning. In addition, there is a washer and dryer to simulate clothes washing and folding activities.

Patients receive one-on-one instruction with the Life Skills specialist to help them create goals for the future. Together, they develop plans based on each patient's unique needs.
An informal graduation ceremony is held each Friday to celebrate patients' completion of the 4 to 6 week HELP program. The staff recognizes each graduate's accomplishments and wishes them well as they leave to start a new phase in their lives. At their graduation, most patients choose to share how their experience in the program has affected their lives and given them new hope for the future. The patients' families may attend as well.
